Govt approves agreement with Denmark for safe labour migration

19 June : The government approved an agreement with Denmark facilitating safe and legal migration of Indian workers to meet the growing demand for skilled and trained personnel in the European country.

The decision to sign the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was taken by the Union Cabinet in its meeting on Friday."The objectives of the MoU are to facilitate safe and legal migration of workers ...and to prevent illegal migration and the smuggling of people for financial benefits," Home Minister P Chidambaram told media after the Cabinet meeting on Friday.

 The proposed MoU provides for cooperation between the two countries in the areas of labour market expansion, employment facilitation, orderly migration and exchange of information and cooperation in introducing best practices, he said.

"The MoU also provides for constitution of a joint working group of both the countries, which will study employment opportunities ...oversee its implementation ...recommend measures to prevent misuse of visit visas by unscrupulous employers and recruiting agencies," he added.
