Ashbeer and Chikka start favourites at Lalit Suri Northern India Junior Championship

Panchkula, June 15: After battling tough conditions in Coimbatore, junior golfers get ready to face off in Panchkula for the second tournament this season on the Lalit Suri Junior/Sub-Junior Golf Tour. The Lalit Suri Northern India Junior Golf Championship will be played at the Panchkula Golf Club from June 16-19.

The field has been given a boost with the top juniors present in full strength. Kapurthala's Ashbeer Singh Saini will be gunning for his second straight title on tour after registering a facile two-shot win at the Lalit Suri Southern India Junior Golf Championship played in Coimbatore two weeks back.

But giving him a run for his money would be Bangalore lad Chikkarangappa, who overcame the disappointment of finishing second at the Southern India by clinching his first title on the senior amateur tour, the Karnataka Open, which was played at Eagleton, his home club last week.

Last year, the Northern India was played at the Army Golf Club in Delhi and it was won by Rashid Khan with Chikkarangappa finished second, three behind the winner. The youngster, exuding confidence, said, "Since Ashbeer has won the Southern India title, I hope I can reverse the tables by winning the Northern India title."

Besides Chikka, another youngster from Bangalore, Khalin Joshi, caught everyone's attention with a strong finish in the last tournament on the senior tour. With a run of good finishes on the junior tour, the KGA player would be hoping to make the good form count.

14-year-old Vashsist Pawar and Vidit Singh would start as favourites in category 'B' and 'C' respectively. Vashist was given a tough fight by Shubhankar Sharma during the Southern India Junior before emerging as the winner in a playoff. Vidit, however, had a far more comfortable outing, maintaing his lead all the way through to emerge as the top player in the U-12 category.

The players will once again be divided into four categories. The U-18 players will take part in category 'A', the U-15 players in category 'B', category 'C' will be made up of U-12 and the 'D' category will be made up of U-10 players.

The tournament will be played on a strokeplay format over 72 holes for players in category 'A','B' and 'C' while the category 'D' players will compete for three days over 54 holes.

The Lalit Suri Northern India Junior Golf Championship is one of the premier events on the tour. This is the second year in a row that the Professional Golfers' Association of India (PGAI) is assisting the IGU in the conduct of the tour. The Lalit Suri Foundation continues to extend its support to the junior tour as the title sponsors, in an attempt to give junior golf a big boost in India and give the budding talent a platform to perform and hone their skills.

Four Sukhoi fighter aircraft inducted

India on Monday inducted four Sukhoi fighter aircraft in Tezpur, which will soon be the base for a full squadron of the IAF's frontline combat jets.An induction ceremony was organised "in the hangar" of the Tezpur airbase in Assam in the presence of Eastern Air Commander Air Marshal S K Bhan, sources in IAF headquarters.

"Today's event was only a formal induction. The four SU-30MKIs had landed here on June 13," they said. The four air superiority fighter aircraft were scheduled to carry out practice sorties from the Tezpur airbase in the last two days, but could not do so due to bad weather, the sources added.

"Soon, Tezpur will be the base for a full Sukhoi squadron, though the IAF is yet to decide which of its four Su-30MKI squadrons will be placed at the disposal of the Eastern Air Command," the sources said.
In fact, Chabua, another fighter base in Assam, is also being readied to host a Sukhoi squadron in the future, they added.

The positioning of the most potent fighter aircraft in the northeast is aimed at strengthening the IAF's assets closer to the Sino-Indian border, the sources said.

Sinha wants other leaders to quit

Sinha wants other leaders to quit

Yashwant Sinha, who had attacked the party leadership of shying away from proper introspection of the electoral debacle, on Monday demanded that other leaders should also follow his example and resign from their posts.

"The party's defeat in the elections is a collective responsibility. When nobody came forward (to take responsibility), I was the first to person to tender my resignation," he told reporters.

Sinha said everyone should follow his example of resigning from their posts owning collective resonsbility, adding a "Kamraj plan" was ideal for reforming the party.

Denying that he had leaked his letter to party President Rajnath Singh, the former Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government wanted a probe into who had leaked it to the media.

On Saturday, Sinha exploded a 'letter bomb' that contained a litany of charges that were seen as a veiled attack on L K Advani and those appointed by him to posts in the Parliamentary Party.

"I had circulated copies of my letter to six members of the Core Group. I demand a probe to find out who had leaked my letter to the media," he said when asked how it reached the media.

Reiterating that he would continue to work for the party, Sinha said he would around his constituency and take stock of the situation.

Bad weather forces change in Amarnath yatra route

The authorities are looking to the weather gods to operationalise the Amarnath yatra pilgrimage from the traditional Pahalgam-Amarnath route which was still wearing a thick blanket of snow.Since the 4600-meter high Mahaguns pass on the 44.8-kms route was covered with 5-feet snow, authorities decided against using this route, keeping in mind the security of pilgrims.

The high altitude Sheshnag lake was partially frozen even at this time of the year and sub-zero cold conditions were prevailing due to snowfall."Due to continuous bad weather conditions, incessant rains accompanied by cold wave conditions, yatra was suspended through this area on June 12," yatra officer of Pahalgam, G M Jalali told visiting media persons at Nunwan base camp in Pahalgam.

Though the yatra began from Baltal route on Monday, he said no decision has been taken for start of yatra in this belt as authorities are waiting for weather to clear up for a trouble-free and safe journey to cave shrine. He said that advance teams have been sent and camps have been operationalised at Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panjtarni areas on this track.

As per the Met department officials, weather will remain cloudy on the route with possibility of rain and snowfall in Pahalgam and adjoining areas. The Amarnath journey traditionally begins from Pahalgam and is completed in five days with night halts at Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panjtarni.

Situated in a narrow gorge at the end of Lidder valley, the shrine which houses ice lingam of Lord Shiva stands at an altitude of 3,888 metres

Dhoni apologises to nation, admits promoting Jadeja a mistake

15 June :  Indian cricket Captain MS Dhoni apologised to the nation for his champion team's early ouster from the T20 World Cup and admitted sending Ravindra Jadeja ahead of Yuvraj Singh in their Super 8 match against England was a mistake.

"We are more disappointed (than you) and we respect the emotions of our fans and the country. We gave our best and we say that with an open heart, we have nothing to hide. But the next Twenty20 world cup is coming again in nine months and we would have an opportunity of proving ourselves," said a dejected Dhoni after India's heart-breaking three-run loss at Lord's Sunday night.
Dhoni sent Jadeja ahead of Yuvraj and himself but the young all-rounder consumed 35 balls for his 25 in the middle overs to put pressure on his batting partners which ultimately led to India losing the match by three runs to crash out of the tournament.

"Sometimes you don't know what would happen. We thought Jadeja could stabilise the innings as well as go after the bowling. He did try but somehow he always found the fielders. It was unfortunate it didn't work for us. We needed somebody to play percentage cricket at that stage."

Dhoni, however, defended his decision to include Jadeja in the playing eleven in place of Pragyan Ojha as well as his opting to field after winning the toss."We were looking at a combination in which our batting could be lengthened. We need lower order bats to contribute. Ojha may be a better bowler but Jadeja is an excellent fielder and both bat and bowl well. It also encourages us to include an extra fast bowler," he said.

"As for fielding first, we realised that under lights the wicket became better for batting."The Indian captain held his batting colleagues responsible for the team's loss and said there cannot be any excuse for their failure to chase down a modest target of 154."We failed in batting. If the opposition scores 153 and you cannot achieve that on a track like this, I don't think there can be any excuse. You just cannot explain that," Dhoni curtly said.

"We lost simply because we did not bat well. I'm rather happy with the performance of the bowlers," he added.Dhoni was candid enough to admit that England bowlers had bounced India out of the match sending down short-pitch stuff quite consistently.

"They started really well. They looked aggressive and used the bouncers really well. All of a sudden our batsmen could not change their game plan."They used short deliveries very well (bouncers and slow bouncers). That really did the job for them," he said.

Dhoni however, had words of praise for his bowlers for fine-tuning their tactics in Twenty20 format."The bowlers have adapted very well to this format. They are now bowling a lot of short balls as well as slower bouncers. Sometimes against quality bowlers it becomes difficult to adapt," said Dhoni. On his own form, Dhoni admitted big hitting has deserted him for some time and he is working hard to get big shots boom off his bat again.

"I am not consistently hitting sixes, I admit it and am working hard at it. But this game is just not about hitting sixes. But hopefully I would be back."

He denied that playing relentless cricket over the last six months had impacted on team performance.

"It's demanding but I wouldn't offer it as excuse. I wouldn't blame IPL. But I don't think anybody say that my team or I didn't give our 100 per cent in matches. If they say, that would spoil the party for me. Performing or not performing is a different issue. I'm not worried about it."

Dhoni said he would not term the Super Eight loss the worst defeat of his career and his side's knocking out the tournament would have an adverse impact on the game in the India.

"I don't think it would have any impact on India. We lost in the 2007 World Cup and it was the worst defeat for me. But we were back after a couple of series," Dhoni said.

"A loss such as this encourages the team to do well and improve. I take it as a good sign. It tells us that we need to be consistent. We have now lost three games in a row at Lord's and that hurt us."

He also didn't think that his row with the media on Virender Sehwag's injury controversy disturbed the dressing room atmosphere.

"We knew there was nothing in it. So it never bothered us or affected the dressing room atmosphere. It's a test of character for us now to bounce back.

"It's not the end of road for us. We will prove a few points to West Indies. We also want to gain a consolation win over South Africa in the final game."

Chief Election Commission asked to cancel registration of B.J.P. as a national recognized political party and to freeze its symbol of ‘Lotus’

Chandigarh. June 15, 2009 : The Akhil Bhartiya Adhiatmic Utthan Mandal have submitted representation to the Chief Election Commission of India for deregistration/or canceling the registration of B.J.P. as a national political party and has also prayed for freezing its symbol of 'Lotus'.

In the representation signed by Shri Mohan Lal Sharma, President and Mr. Nasib Singh Gill Former Deputy Speaker of Punjab as Member of the Akhil Bhartiya Adhiatmic Utthan Mandal it is alleged that the Hindus who form majority in India are both a civilization and a conglomerate of religions. The Hinduism is based on the idea of universal receptivity. It is a secular and tolerant faith and know no hostility or hat redness towards any other religious faiths.

The representation further contains that unfortunately the Bhartiya Janta Party, ever. since its registration as a national political party, for its personal unfair political gains have always strived hard to divide the Indian society on communal lines. The B.J.P. have thus grossly violated the statutory undertaking that it gave u/s 29A of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951 to the commission that "it shall bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and to the principles of socialism, secularism and democracy and uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.

It is further alleged in the representation that the prominent members of the B.J.P. have always spread communal venom. But the B.J.P. high commands instead of taking action against them have always honoured them by giving important political assignments.

The representation quotes the sayings of Mr. Lal Ji Tondon former B.J.P. minister who in his election from Lucknow assembly seat in year 2007 said "The day is not far off when we all be afraid of even calling ourselves a Hindu. You will not find Sohan Lal, Mohan Lal, Atma Ram or Radha Krishan anywhere. Wherever you turn you will see only an Abbas or Naqvi or Maulvi. They want to make India into Pakistan."

Mr. Yogi Aditya Nath, B.J.P. M.P. is notorious for his Muslim Seditimzs hashings. He raised slogan "Musalman Ke Do Hi Sathi, Pakistan ya Kabarstan."Mr. Varun Gandhi (Now B.J.P. Member Parliament) while campaigning in his election in Pilibhit, in a meeting asked the Sikhs and Muslims to walk out of his meetings. He called Sikhs as terrorists as they murdered his grandmother. He made hate-speeches. Even the Election Commission condemned and censured Varun Gandhi for his hate and inflammatory speeches.

In 1991, Dr. Dass Rao Deshmukh, then B.J.P. candidate from Nanded assembly constituency made appeal to voters "If a Muslim would try to destroy Hinduism in Hindustan, the public would not keep quiet, but take out the intestines like that of Afzul Khan. Muslims are loyal to Pakistan. Urdu should not be the one of languages of Hindustan.

Quoting many such instances in the representation, it is alleged that the B.J.P. by its conduct and behavior has not stood to the principles on which this association or body was based. The B.J.P. has derailed itself from the policies, aims and objects that it undertook to pursue in national interest. Instead of strengthening secular tendencies in the national fabric, it has spread venom of communalism that has disturbed public order and public peace. It is further alleged that the B.J.P. is revolutionizing the process of dividing the country on communal lines. Thus it has endangered the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India. Thus the B.J.P. have lost all its right to continue as a recognized national political Party.

The Election Commission of India is requested to presence, protect and promote the secular creed of Indian nation by deregistering B.J.P. as a politicalparty and by freezing its symbol of 'Lotus' and crush with heavy hands such communalists and political opportunists.

Seven sports seek to join the Olympic programme

15 June : Seven sports presented their vision for inclusion in the Olympic Games programme today in a series of briefings for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board. The seven sports — baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby, softball and squash — are vying for two programme slots at the 2016 Games. After reviewing the merits of all seven, the Executive Board should recommend two for inclusion at its next meeting in August. The IOC Session will make the final decision at its meeting in October, scheduled in conjunction with the Olympic Congress.

"All seven sports made interesting and informative presentations. All have something to offer. In the end, the decision will come down to which are the best fit for the Olympic programme," said IOC President Jacques Rogge.

The presentations to the Executive Board are part of a broader effort by the IOC to strengthen the Olympic programme and improve the evaluation process.

The reforms began with the decision, in 2002, to conduct a systematic review of the Olympic programme after every edition of the Games to ensure that it remains exciting and relevant. Sports have to show merit to join the programme and to remain on it. At the time the reforms were adopted, no sport had been dropped from the programme since 1936.

The IOC also agreed, in 2002, to limit the number of sports in the Games of the Olympiad to 28. There are currently 26 sports on the programme, leaving two slots open.

Other changes approved two years later added more transparency and fairness to the evaluation process. The IOC established 33 criteria, with an emphasis on universality, popularity and image.

The Olympic Programme Commission, composed of IOC members, representatives of International Federations and National Olympic Committees as well as experts, oversees the evaluation process. The examination of sports seeking to join the programme also includes on-site visits to actual competitions. The Commission will deliver a report assessing the candidate sports to the Executive Board in August.

"The fact that so many sports want to be on the Olympic programme reflects the global appeal of the Games. It is important to have a well-defined, transparent evaluation process that is fair to all," said Franco Carraro, Chairman of the Olympic Programme Commission.
