Ashbeer and Chikka start favourites at Lalit Suri Northern India Junior Championship

Panchkula, June 15: After battling tough conditions in Coimbatore, junior golfers get ready to face off in Panchkula for the second tournament this season on the Lalit Suri Junior/Sub-Junior Golf Tour. The Lalit Suri Northern India Junior Golf Championship will be played at the Panchkula Golf Club from June 16-19.

The field has been given a boost with the top juniors present in full strength. Kapurthala's Ashbeer Singh Saini will be gunning for his second straight title on tour after registering a facile two-shot win at the Lalit Suri Southern India Junior Golf Championship played in Coimbatore two weeks back.

But giving him a run for his money would be Bangalore lad Chikkarangappa, who overcame the disappointment of finishing second at the Southern India by clinching his first title on the senior amateur tour, the Karnataka Open, which was played at Eagleton, his home club last week.

Last year, the Northern India was played at the Army Golf Club in Delhi and it was won by Rashid Khan with Chikkarangappa finished second, three behind the winner. The youngster, exuding confidence, said, "Since Ashbeer has won the Southern India title, I hope I can reverse the tables by winning the Northern India title."

Besides Chikka, another youngster from Bangalore, Khalin Joshi, caught everyone's attention with a strong finish in the last tournament on the senior tour. With a run of good finishes on the junior tour, the KGA player would be hoping to make the good form count.

14-year-old Vashsist Pawar and Vidit Singh would start as favourites in category 'B' and 'C' respectively. Vashist was given a tough fight by Shubhankar Sharma during the Southern India Junior before emerging as the winner in a playoff. Vidit, however, had a far more comfortable outing, maintaing his lead all the way through to emerge as the top player in the U-12 category.

The players will once again be divided into four categories. The U-18 players will take part in category 'A', the U-15 players in category 'B', category 'C' will be made up of U-12 and the 'D' category will be made up of U-10 players.

The tournament will be played on a strokeplay format over 72 holes for players in category 'A','B' and 'C' while the category 'D' players will compete for three days over 54 holes.

The Lalit Suri Northern India Junior Golf Championship is one of the premier events on the tour. This is the second year in a row that the Professional Golfers' Association of India (PGAI) is assisting the IGU in the conduct of the tour. The Lalit Suri Foundation continues to extend its support to the junior tour as the title sponsors, in an attempt to give junior golf a big boost in India and give the budding talent a platform to perform and hone their skills.
