27 Chandigarh doctors leave for Singapore

Chandigarh, June 16 -- A team of 27 doctors, 18 from GMCH-32, eight from PGI and one from an NGO in Chandigarh, left for Singapore today to participate in the second part of the Singapore-India Joint Training Programme on Enhanced Healthcare Management (SIGNET) to be held from June 17-20 at Singapore General Hospital, Singapore.

        It aims at giving healthcare in Chandigarh a shot in the arm. The faculty of GMCH-32, PGIM and NGO of UT who went through strenuous classroom teaching and had completed their three-day internal training course in Chandigarh, have been sent to Singapore for the second leg of the programme.

        An ambitious project of the Chandigarh Administration, Signet has been brought to City Beautiful by Prof Lazer Mathew of Vellore. It envisages imparting training to 500 doctors of north India within the next three years. The first part was inaugurated by the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Gen (Retd) S. F. Rodrigues, a few days ago at GMCH-32.

      Prof Raj Bahadur, Director Principal, GMCH-32, said that Singapore spent less money on health sector as compared to the USA but provided better health services. "Since Chandigarh resembles Singapore, it was thought to emulate it here and our efforts are to bring our health indicators close to that of Singapore," he said.

        The project has been funded by the Catholic Health Association of India, an NGO. The first-ever workshop of its kind to sensitize senior faculty of both institutions . It was followed by the trainers to be trained at GMCH, including the faculty of GMCH, PGIMER, NGOs dealing with rural dispensaries under the Director, Health Services, Chandigarh
