Orissa extends summer vacation as heatwave continues; toll 49

17 June :  With the prevailing heatwave taking at least 49 lives and monsoon delayed by one week, the Orissa government on Tuesday extended the summer vacation in schools till 24th June, official sources said.The schools were scheduled to open from Wednesday.

In letters to all the district collectors, the secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management Department, said the summer vacation was being extended till 24th June in view of heatwave in the state."The order will be applicable to all schools including government, private, public and English medium schools operating in the state," it said.

While the day temperature in the state capital was on Tuesday recorded at 41.4 degree Celsius, maximum of 44.8 degree Celsius was reported from Sambalpur town, Revenue Department sources said.
