Russian Soyuz-ST carrier rocket to be launched in 2009 or 2010

16 June : Russian Soyuz-ST carrier rocket's maiden launch from Kourou in French Guiana is scheduled for the end of this or the beginning of 2010, Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos) chief Anatoly Perminov said.  "Our first serious project with the ESA, specifically with France, is the construction of the launch pad for Soyuz carrier rockets at Kourou. We have a heavy obligation. We should complete the construction by the end of the year" Perminov said on Monday.

The first launch should be made at the end of this or the beginning of next year."Roskosmos is negotiating with the European Space Agency (ESA) and several potential partners for the launch of up to 20 Soyuz-ST carrier rockets from Kourou in French Guiana.The Yekaterinburg-based Research and Production Association of Automation has designed and made all control systems for the carrier rocket.

Arianespace pins big hopes on the Russian launch vehicle. "The missile will be used to put communications satellites weighing up to three tonnes into geostationary orbits," the head of the space agency said.
