Free education for all up to class XII in Uttarakhand

17 :All the children studying in government and government-aided schools in Uttarakhand will now get free education up to class XII, Chief Minister B C Khanduri announced today. The state government was till date providing free education for all students from class 1 to 8, while the girls up to class XII enjoyed the facility.

But from now onwards, boys will also get free education till their intermediate level, Khanduri told reporters in Dehradun and added that extension of the facility will put a financial burden of Rs 3.95 crore on the state exchequer.

The government has also decided to provide merit scholarships to students of general category from weaker economic backgrounds for pursuing courses in professional institutes, he said, adding students belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribes will also get the similar facility.

Khanduri said the decision to launch Chief Minister's state employment complimentary scheme was taken in addition to the centre-funded National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) to benefit maximum number of people in villages.

Under NREGA, an unemployed person gets guaranteed employment for minimum of 100 days "but it has been seen that sometimes, due to shortage of materials used for construction work, the unemployed men do not get the maximum benefit of the scheme," he said.
